London – Thursday, 15 October, 2020 – Kaluza, the leading intelligent energy platform, today announces that it has won the award for ‘Green Infrastructure Project of the Year’ at BusinessGreen’s virtual awards ceremony.
After a rigorous adjudication process, the expert judges were impressed by Kaluza’s innovative flexibility solution that enables domestic energy storage devices in Orkney to capture green energy that would have otherwise gone to waste.
The Smart Islands Energy Systems (SMILE) project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme , is one of the biggest smart grid projects in the world. Kaluza is integrating an extra 0.5 MW of storage capacity into Orkney’s local grid through a number of electric vehicle smart chargers, domestic storage batteries and low carbon heating devices.
The Kaluza platform optimises devices to import energy from the 900kW Rousey community turbine during off peak hours, or when there is surplus wind generation, allowing residents to consume energy when needed and preventing wasteful wind curtailment.
Conor Maher-McWilliams, Head of Flexibility at Kaluza, commented: “Kaluza is on a mission to future proof the energy system. Our intelligent platform puts consumers and communities at its core and enables the grid to integrate more local, green power. We are thrilled to win this prestigious award and look forward to applying our learnings from Orkney to unlock the potential of flexibility for the rest of the UK.”
