- Kaluza, OVO Group’s intelligent energy platform, will demonstrate the value of flexible charging across 300 electric cars in UK Power Networks’ landmark trial
- Smart platform to combine device data with local pricing signals to dynamically control car charging patterns and reduce demand peaks
- Trial investigates scalability and cost saving potential for grid operators and customers
London – Thursday, 18th July 2019 – Kaluza, OVO Group’s intelligent energy platform, has been selected by UK Power Networks, the country’s biggest electricity distributor, to deliver flexibility across 300 electric car charge points in the landmark ‘Shift’ trial.
Kaluza’s proven technology will intelligently combine real-time pricing signals from UK Power Networks with time-of-use data across hundreds of electric cars. By initiating car charging when energy demand is low, the platform can create valuable flexibility for grid operators helping to alleviate critical peaks in demand. At scale, this flexibility can create huge savings for both drivers and network operators, by developing smart grid infrastructure able to accommodate millions of electric cars and electric heating systems. By spreading demand across the day and reducing spikes, the grid can also make better use of renewable energy generation and reduce fossil fuel burning.
Recruitment for the trial will begin in August with smart chargers available through leading electric vehicle charger installer, ChargedEV, and the UK’s top independent energy provider, OVO Energy.
Conor Maher-McWilliams, Head of Flexibility at Kaluza commented: “The boom in electric cars will create a whole new layer of grid complexity, so taking intelligent control of charging will be vital. Technology that joins the dots between home devices and the local grid paves the way for an agile, zero carbon energy system that works for everyone. We are thrilled to collaborate with UK Power Networks in turning this vision into reality.”
Ian Cameron, Head of Innovation at UK Power Networks said: “Smart charger optimisation has a significant role to play in supporting the country’s energy network. The Shift trial will go a long way in helping us gauge the potential of innovations like Kaluza’s in shaping a more customer-centric and renewables-driven energy system.”
