OVO Energy has more than doubled the amount of renewable electricity* offered to customers as standard on its three core tariffs from 15% to 33% – almost double the UK average**.
OVO Energy already offers a Greener Energy plan, with 100% renewable electricity, but the company has been working for some time on increasing the proportion of renewable electricity offered as standard to all other customers on its standard plans (Better and Simpler). Although the 33% figure represents more than double the previous amount, the company has stressed that this is just another step in an ongoing commitment to offering customers cleaner energy while still remaining price competitive.
Justin DeKoszmovszky, Head of Sustainability at OVO Energy said: “We want to do what’s right for our customers, which means offering the greenest energy possible at prices they can afford. This is about offering an affordable, mainstream green alternative for customers who want to do their part, but aren’t ready to go 100% green. We’ve really challenged ourselves on how ambitious we can be whilst still shielding customers from any real impact on their bills, and we’re delighted we’ve been able to reach more than double where we were previously.”
The introduction of 33% green electricity will take place on 1 April, and will be reflected in OVO’s 2015 Fuel Mix Disclosure.
*Renewable power is generated from wind, solar, geothermal, wave, tidal, hydro, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas and biogas. OVO does not yet offer ‘additionality’ with this tariff.
**UK average for 2013-2014 was 16.7%. Figures obtained from Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)
